How the Ontario G1 licence works

G1 is Ontario's learner licence and the first step of graduated licensing: G1, then G2, then a full licence. This page explains the idea in plain language; the official handbook is the reference for the current rules.

Unofficial practice test. Not affiliated with the Government of Ontario, the Ministry of Transportation, DriveTest or ServiceOntario. This is not the official exam.

Who can get a G1?

Normally you must be at least 16, pass a vision test, and pass a written knowledge test on road signs and rules. The knowledge test is the part this site helps you practise for.

What does a G1 driver have to follow?

G1 drivers drive supervised, with zero blood alcohol, and with other restrictions on passengers, roads and hours. Do not rely on a summary alone: read the current restrictions in the Official MTO Driver's Handbook before you drive or book a test.

How does practice on this site work?

There are 195 original practice questions: 100 on signs, signals and markings and 95 on rules. The full mock test uses 40 questions, 20 + 20, with results by section and a target of 16/20 per section. That mock format is a target format to be confirmed against the official source. Practice is free, with no account.
